Release - 5/July/2000
Dublin : "Motor Insurance loading for driving in the safest place
in Ireland".
A recent report by the National Roads Authority (NRA) titled
"Young Driver Accidents 1997", shows that Dublin had the lowest young
driver fatality rate per 100,000 population. It is more than eight times
lower than any of the Counties Monaghan, Cavan, Louth or Donegal. View
the statistics here.
Mick Murphy, the National Organiser of MIJAG, the Motor Insurance Justice
Action Group says "According to this report Dublin is a relatively safe
place to drive, yet the insurance premiums of all drivers is loaded in
the Greater Dublin area. These facts completely undermine the assertion
by the motor insurance industry and the Government that if accident rates
come down then so will premiums". Mr Murphy added "It is an established
fact that the big costs for insurance companies are personal injury claims.
This report also shows that the injury rate for young drivers in the capital
are well below the national average and still there is a loading of at
least £200 for driving in Dublin".
"Our Campaign is now calling on the Government to carry out a full investigation
into the operation of the motor insurance industry in relation to how
premiums are arrived at. Young drivers are being ripped of on the basis
of their age and now city drivers because of where they live." Mr Murphy
added.
