Young Drivers still Being Discriminated Against
The Document here
is the submission made to the ODEI in March outlining the Test Case of
David Green, a young driver from Clonsilla who paid £4,071.61 to Quinn
Direct for Motor Insurance. The case was held up because the discrimination
happened before the act came into affect in October 2000. Mr Green has
since renewed his insurance and despite a years accident free driving
the premium has increased to £4,090.52.
Mick Murphy the National Organiser of MIJAG said "Insurance Premiums are
used in many countries as an incentive to bring about good driving behaviour.
Despite and unblemished record David Green is now paying even more for
insurance. The insurance companies are not playing their part to help
reduce the accident levels on our roads".
"MIJAG believe that young drivers like David Green should be charged the
average insurance premium of £480 when they start driving. This should
only increase if safety related driving offences are committed. There
would then be a massive incentive to behave in a safe manner on the road"
said Mick Murphy.
