Insurance Rip-Off Confirmed to Government
Car
Insurance Rip-Off was confirmed to the Government last summer and still
they did nothing.
"The scoop in the Irish Times by John McManus on Saturday 24th which reveals
that the Government were given an "Executive Summary" by the MIAB last
summer which shows that the Insurance Companies are indeed ripping off
young drivers will have huge repercussions" said Mick Murphy the National
Organiser of MIJAG the Motor Insurance Justice Action Group.
"The summary to the Government shows that that insurance companies make
bigger profits from young drivers under the age of 25 than from almost
any other group. This is counter to the picture painted by the insurance
industry for years and calls into question any and all information given
out by them" said Mr Murphy. "When was the Minister (Noel Treacy) going
to look into the fact that only two out of the 17 insurance companies
offer quotes to this relatively profitable group of drivers. Did he not
smell a rat and ask the competition authority to look into this. When
was he going to investigate the practice where the five largest companies
own INSECOM through which they all give quotes to brokers" Mr Murphy added.
Mr Murphy went on to say "Every time the Government were asked in the
Dáil what they were doing about the huge premiums being paid by young
drivers they stonewalled and referred to the MIAB and its final report.
Yet they were sitting on the crucial preliminary results. The MIAB report
is due to be published at the end of this year a few months before a General
Election, too late for the Government to act".
"The Government better start getting real on this issue and start discussing
with the young drivers about their proposals for improved driver safety.
MIJAG wants an end to discrimination against young drivers. First time
drivers should be insured at average premiums and kept at that level provided
no safety related driving offences are committed" Mr Murphy said.
MIJAG is going ahead with a protest by young drivers in the Dublin area
from the Phoenix Park at 5.30pm on Saturday April 7th. The campaign slogan
for this Protest will be the same as it was from the start "End the Car
Insurance Rip-Off"
