Having problems getting a quote???

MIJAG do not recommend any particular insurance company as we believe they are all engaged in a massive rip-off of young drivers. However, as we do get a lot of emails from people asking for advice, here are some tips to help you.

Three companies quote under 25's
There are three insurance companies we know of that will quote drivers under the age of 25. They are AXA, Quinn Direct and Hibernian Insurance (via the ignition scheme, see below). Check the Golden Pages for your local insurance company office.

Of course, according to the Equal Status Act, all insurance companies must quote you a price for insurance - it is the law. If you really press them and mention this point, they will give you a quote (they might ask you to put it in writing) but it will be so outrageously high you will laugh and slam the phone down!

Hibernian Ignition Scheme
Hibernian Insurance have introduced a new scheme which they call Ignition. Basically you take part in a one day advanced driving course and if you pass they will give you a 20% reduction on your insurance (with an optional extra 10% reduction if you agree not to drive between the hours of 11pm and 6am). We have received reports of first time drivers being insured for less than €2,000 which is a big saving on the usual quotes of €4,000 and €5,000 from companies. You can contact Ignition on 1850 235 435 or email ignition@hibernian.ie . More information available at http://www.hiberniandirect.ie/ignition.asp

Cheaper quotes via a broker

Sometimes you can get a much improved quote by phoning insurance brokers. Insurance brokers are basically a middle man between you and the insurance company. You will deal with the broker all the time and they deal with the insurance company on your behalf. You will find a large list of brokers in the Golden Pages. Try them all as a small number will offer significantly better quotes than the rest. I saved over £500 at my last renewal by going through a broker rather than directly to the insurance company. Some of them also allow you to pay in monthly installments so you can spread the payments over a year rather than paying it all up front. The interest can be pretty hefty though (approx 17% APR).

IIF Helpdesk
If you still have no joy getting a quote after trying the above, ring the Irish Insurance Federation's helpdesk (Tel: 01-6761820 or email fed@iif.ie). They will try to arrange something for you.
