Dear MIJAG,
I am a 24 yo first time driver, provisional licence, I have recently paid
a deposit on a new FIAT PUNTO 60s, 1.2 litre. I have never driven before,
but I need the car now as the company I work for is moving, and i will
need to drive as there is no direct public transport from my home to work.
I was initially quoted £2400 3rd F+T with Quinn Direct, 2 weeks later
and a second quote, this time PMPA wanted £3400, when I explained my Quinn
direct quote, the clerk in PMPA, thought i was joking, practically laughed
me off the phone. Remember now, that PMPA quote was 3rd F+T as well, not
comprehensive, did he pull it out of a hat?.
Recently I was in a crash with a friend in his car, no one hurt, and thankfully
little damage done so both parties involved paid for themselves => no
claims on insurance, nevertheless it frightened me to think that my new
car when insured 3rd party, would not be covered at all, even after paying
so high a price, I decided to get a quote for comprehensive, Quinn again,
this time they want £3700, I live in dublin, i will be 25 in july, I have
never driven and therefore never crashed, now with my car payments only
£30 per week, or £120 per month, i have to add £80 per week insurance
and £317 per month!!! So in total i am paying £437 per month to keep my
car, and that doesnt include running costs or tax!!! This is really a
very bad state of affairs, I am embarassed that I even had to wait so
long to get driving, my younger sister is driving a 1.0L Nissan Micra,
her insurance is £1600, she has never driven before either!!, she is 20.
WHEN will something be done, to stop these rip-off merchants from taking
the piss? The government cannot stand by and watch, there is a general
election next year, so I'm sure that the campaigns will soon get under
way, what politician do you reckon will be the first to "recognise" young
male drivers plights in this country and "take a stand" for us??? Will
it then be brushed under the carpet, as soon as the winners of that election
step into the Dail? and they wonder why there is such a huge drop in the
numbers of young people even slightly interested in politics in this country,
and why we dont trust the government? its because they would rather talk
shit about the whole thing, rather than do something, i bet their own
twenty somethings and teenagers, dont pay the premiums that the rest of
us do!
Sincerely Yours,
A chara,
A safe but broke driver.
