I just had a new twist to my car insurance. Last September I was insured along with my father on a '97 1.8 opel Vectra for £1150 for both of us, I recieved my quote for this year yesterday. Bear in mind I have not claimed, not crashed or been charged or anything so it has been a clean year of driving. However we downgraded to a 2000 1.6 Opel Vectra and the insurance quote has gone up to £2020 all because of me the lady in the brokers said. This has realy pissed me off because I had a job relying on me being insured on the car but I simply refuse to pay a severe hike in price for nothing. I DONE NOTHING to justify this massive(in my view) jump in price. I'm going away now buying a bike or something.

Hi just looking at your website.
I had to sell my 1.1 Seicento sporting because I was getting ripped off by the insurance companies. In my first year of driving I was insured in a fiat Cinquencento 900cc 18yrs old, provisional, 0 no claims this was £2250 In my second year of driving. I was insured in a brand new 1998 Seicento 1.1 19yrs, provisional, 1 yr no claim £1700 In my third year of driving. I was isured in a Seicento 1.1 20yrs,provisional, 2yrs no claims £3400. I was with Pmpa for those 3 yrs and that was the quote they gave me. I then turned to Quinn direct and they quoted me £2400 which was still higher than when I first started to drive! Plus I had the no claims and I was older. I got onto PMPA and asked why my insurance had gone up and they told me they sent out a letter informing me that it would be going up because of the amount of accidents young people were having. So I had to sell the car as it had gotten too expensive and I felt like I was being ripped off big time. By the way I am from Crumlin and I have all of the quotes in writing from the named insurance companies

Hi There,
I got my insurance renewal in the post yesterday from hibernian insurance. I am 23y.o. insured as a named driver under my fathers name. There has been a 30% increase for no reason other than the insurer has decided to hike "my kind of policy".

The very nice clerk whom I spoke with explained (off the record) that the co. has identified that a lot of young people are getting less expensive policies (note I didn't say cheaper because there is nothing cheap about any insurance in this country) by going under a parents name and therefore have decided to make sure that we get shafted as badly as everyone else. I bought the car I am currently driving on the basis that I could just about afford the insurance as it was. Now with a 30% increase I may have to sell my car and resort to taxi's (which will probably be cheaper).

You may want to warn other young drivers about this as you can bet if one insurer has done it the rest will follow.

By the way best of luck with the site, if I can help at all let me know.

Hi
I have now been driving for three years. I initially bought my car and put the ownership of the car in the name of my father in order to try and reduce the money I would have to pay for insurance, as I knew at the time of buying the car (I was 19 going on 20) that this would represent the biggest expense of having my own car. The car in question is 993cc Opel Corsa City, 1991 Reg. and I am a provisionally licensed driver.

Year One:
I was initially quoted IEP 800.00 by PMPA as a name driver. The insurance type was fully comprehensive. This cost would cover both myself and my father for the period of one year. I accepted this quote as it was the cheapest I could find at the time.

Year Two:
I was quoted and accepted a quote of IEP 1300.00 to renew my policy, by PMPA as a name driver. The insurance type was fully comprehensive. This cost would cover both myself and my father for the period of one year. I accepted this quote as it was the cheapest I could find at the time. Allow me to point out that neither my father nor I had been involved in an accident of any type in the previous year, nor had any modifications been made to the car.

Year Three:
I was quoted and did not accept a quote of IEP2500.00 to renew my policy, by PMPA as a name driver. The insurance type was fully comprehensive. This cost would cover both myself and my father for the period of one year. As in the previous year no modifications had been made to the car. When I contacted PMPA in relation to this they could give me no reasonable explanation as to why the quote was inflated so dramatically in the period of one year Granted I had been involved in an accident in the previous year, but no liability had been attributed to me and it was decided that the other party was entirely at fault for the accident. PMPA furnished me with a letter to this effect. The only explanation given for this dramatic increase was that PMPA were trying to stop parents having their children as named drivers when in actual fact it was the children were the main driver of the car. To this end I was quoted what it would cost for me to become the main driver of the car. This quote however was structured in the form of the cost of having me as a name driver on my fathers policy. The renewal letter made no reference to the fact that I was being quoted as the main driver.

I have since shopped around and have managed to match the quote that I received from PMPA in year two with One Direct. However I have had to reduce the cover to Third Party Fire & Theft.

I would appreciate if you could include me on your mail - list going forward as I am very interested to see what the Government are going to do in order to provide affordable and reasonable insurance for young male drivers and furthermore will there ever be a decrease in the price of cars as at present we are paying tax on tax for new cars in Ireland.

I'm not sure if you have had much success in publicising this Campaign but I have forwarded your mail address & website address to a journalist friend of mine. He may or may not contact you.
