Dear MIJAG,
I am 22, I am French and I am working in Dublin for a year. I decided
to buy a car in Ireland (Opel astra 1.4l). Most of the French that I know
have a French car and a French insurance even if they can't be covered
for a full year ( the limit is 3 month in a EU country). I wanted to get
a car and an insurance in Ireland for be in "the rules". I ask for a quote
with AXA (French company) and told them that I had a 5 years claim free
insurance with AXA France, I have my full licence since 1996 ( had all
the document to prove that).
The quote was 2451 pounds for a full comprehensive insurance! I told them
that it was 6 times what I used to pay in france when I was 20. They told
me that they did not accept to give me any claim free bonus even if it
was the same company before.
I am fully agree with your actions. I really think that young Irish drivers
are highly overcharged for car insurance compare to other country from
the European Community. In France for example my insurance for a 1.8 Peugeot
309 was 450 pounds a year. At that price even a student can get a car.
Here even professionals hesitate to get a car. That is a situation absolutely
unacceptable. I don't think that there is that much difference between
Ireland and France when we are talking about accident and claims. My solution
get a car in France and insure it in France, Then bring it back to Ireland
like all the French people who work in Ireland do.
