Update - 31/May/2002
David
Green stayed in until the fouth count and eventually went out on 1313
votes. He was the strongest independent candidate with all others being
eliminated before the fourth count.
All
the main players in this election had young drivers car insurance as a
main issue with people like Mary Harney talking about bringing Irish insurance
premiums in line with the UK. But for the work of MIJAG this issue would
not have achieved such prominence in the election. Had the main parties
not taken up the issue in their manifestos, David Green would have taken
a much higher vote.
The
other candidates associated with MIJAG, Mick Murphy, Mick Barry and Lisa
Maher all polled over 1000 votes and are all set to do well in council
elections due in 2004.
MIJAG
are planning to run several more candidates across the country in the
council elections to build on the support David Green received in the
general election.
